Cinque Terre | 2019

 Cinque Terre | 2019

After doing research on Italy, we saw photos online of Cinque Terre and decided we should really drop by for the coastline views and unique villages houses not seen in Singapore.

[Cinque Terre lies in the west of La Spezia Province, and comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.]

Monterosso al Mare is at the westernmost of the Cinque Terre.[The village was briefly excluded from the Cinque Terre trail in 1948, but was re-introduced in mid-1949. Italian officials considered the village too large to be considered part of the historic trail.][During World War II, many young men from the Cinque Terre fought for the resistance against the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini, and the subsequent Nazi German occupation of Italy.]

Corniglia[Unlike the other localities of the Cinque Terre, Corniglia is not directly adjacent to the sea. Instead, it is on the top of a promontory about 100 metres high, surrounded on three sides by vineyards and terraces, the fourth side descends steeply to the sea. To reach Corniglia, it is necessary to climb the Lardarina, a long brick flight of steps composed of 33 flights with 382 steps or, otherwise follow a vehicular road that, from the station, leads to the village.]

Beautiful villages, really enjoyed the walks in the small towns and experiences. On a whole they may kind of look similar due to the similar colourful architecture and the ocean view, but I remember small details from each town. Some sea was viewed from a high ground, some just in front of the splashing waves, some town we climbed a lot of stairs, some we enjoyed a meal at a cliffside restaurant watching the sunset. All enjoyable memories made with my family.
